Croydon Cable Tunnel Project

Back to news

FSD are delighted to be working with Morgan Est on the new £60m Croydon Cable Tunnel works for National Grid. This 10km long, 3m diameter tunnel for 400kv cables includes four shafts and all associated mechanical and electrical works, and is due to be completed in 2011. It is part of an ongoing programme to move energy supplies underground.

FSD, in a joint venture with Anord, have been contracted to integrate gas detection, fire detection and heat detection monitoring; in addition installing security systems, gas extraction equipment, specialised lighting and power within hazardous areas.

Work has now started, and miles of cables will have to be installed underground to achieve the integration of these systems, along with many hours spent in engineering to provide a safe, practical installation and operational system.
